Filbert Street
Stockton, CA
On August 3 , 1995, San Joaquin County Public Health Services,
Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) representatives, Diane
Hinson and Margaret Lagorio met with you and CH2M Hill
representative, Bern Baumgartner. This letter is to summarize and
comment on our discussions regarding the above referenced site .
According to San Joaquin County Flood Control maps the depth to
groundwater in the mid 1970' s was 100 feet below grade and in 1986
the depth to groundwater was 50 feet below grade so the contaminant
smear zone may be as great as 50 feet with contamination above and
below current water level . Soil type to 100 feet below grade is
predominately sandy, clayey silt . Current depth to groundwater is
approximately 65 feet below grade. All these factors make
remediation of the site challenging.
Del Monte has initiated source removal through air sparging and
vapor extraction. CH2M Hill indicated that the most recent
groundwater sample results from monitoring well DIS-1 showed
reduced concentrations but cautioned against being overly
optimistic about these results . CH2M Hill stated they had seen
contaminant levels be reduced at other sites and then return after
the vapor extraction system had been shut down for a period of
time .
PHS/EHD stated they were concerned with the latest water sample
results from DIS-1 not being representative of groundwater
contaminant levels because this well is about 5 feet from the air
sparge and vapor extraction wells AS/SVE-1, which were in operation
when the water sample was collected from DIS-1 .
PHS/EHD stated that vapor extraction had been used successfully to
remediate contamination at several sites in San Joaquin County.
Examples of these sites are Guild Winery (1 Winemasters Way, Lodi) ,
ARCO (501 W. Kettleman Lane, Lodi) and Regal Station (1448 N. E1
Dorado Street, Stockton) .
PHS/EHD has concerns over the construction of the air sparge and
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
