Steve Ronzone
Page 3
Analysis for these bacteria should be included in the proposal .
The proposal should be submitted to PHS/EHD by September 1, 1995,
for their review and comment, so the study can begin October 1,
1995 .
CH2M Hill presented a table indicating the cost of remediation with
an expanded air sparge/soil vapor extraction (AS/SVE) system was
much higher than intrinsic bioremediation with the current AS/SVE
system. The time to achieve background levels of contamination was
shown to be greater than 30 years for both alternatives. PHS/EHD
has observed sites remediated to background or near background
levels in 5 to 6 years using vapor extraction. Therefore, it is
the opinion of PHS/EHD, that the cost shown for an expanded AS/SVE
system is too high. In addition, the radius of influence of the
air sparge and vapor extraction wells has not been determined, so
the number of additional wells required to remediate all of the
contamination is not known.
There was discussion about future reimbursement from the SWRCB
Cleanup Fund Program for the site investigation and remediation.
PHS/EHD recommends that you contact George Lockewood with the SWRCB
Cleanup Fund Program at (916) 227-4424 , to discuss pre-approval of
any proposed work, obtain approved cost estimates for work and to
ascertain whether the costs of the "Intrinsic Study" work is
eligible for reimbursement .
If you have any questions or comments contact Margaret Lagorio at
(209) 468-3449 .
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Margaret Lagorio, Lead Senior REHS Diane*Hinson,Hinson, REHS
Site Mitigation Unit Supervisor
ML
c : Del Monte - Soon Kim
c : PARMACEAST - W L Simmons
c: CH2M Hill - Bern Baumgartner
c : CVRWQCB - Beth Thayer
c : SWRCB - George Lockewood
