PHS/EHD has the following
comments for your cons deretiolf Aad response.
An investigation was initiated on December 19, 1996 to determine the extent ofsoil contamination that was
evidenced at the time of the June 28, 1999 tank removal. ;Four soil borings were advaaced.and<frun we soil boring,
SPI,a groundwater grab sample was collared Significant soil contamination was dated up to 15,000 m*U TPH-
gasoline(Armstrong Method)from the sample,SPI,collected at 20 feet below ground surface(bgs)and groundwater
contamination was;detected at concentrations of 5,700µ44 TPH-gasoline: Please note that Table 3,contained an error
for TOC results for the sample,SP3,collected at 28 feet bgs. According to the BSK laboratory report 61 mg1kg was
detected rather thea 62 which was reported on the table. Unfortunately this is not the only problem with the
presentation ofthe analytical results. The notation of ND}on a summary"table is meaningless, particularly when
detection limits range froth<005 mg/kg to<.125 using the reporting limit for benzene as an example. Also, three
different analytical laboratories were used and the table should reflect the source of the results. Finally, the summary
table should reflect the method used for analysis. The only sample from SP1 (20 feet)that was not analyzed by
Twinning Laboratory was analyzed by BSK laboratory utilizing a different method. All the other samples from SP1
were analyzed using EPA Method 5030(Purge and Trap)and EPA 8020(GCJP1D)except the sample colleted from
SP1 at 20 feet which was analyzed using the Armstrong Method. According to the laboratory this method is a modified
zero head space total concentration leaching potential(TCLP). PHSfEHD requested that sample SPI undergo both
EPA Method 8020 and TCLP.analysis. The Twinning Laboratory report and the BSK laboratory report failed to
inchtde QA1QC data regarding the samples analyzed. The corrected summary table, the water sample laboratory report
and>dte QA/W data reports shall be submitted by August 15, 1997.
Please also submit boring that have been signed by a registened geologist~ Pursua to tete Business and
Professions Code all geologic plans, reports,or documents shalt be signer by a registeted, geologist or registered
certified.specialty geologic which will indicate his responsibility for thein.
Insummary, significant'teachable concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons have been detectednit the:snail.:and:l ly.
in the,groundwater.
