i
{ City of Stockton A68106.03A
May 29, 1996 Page A-3
• During groundwater sampling, a travel blank sample consisting of organic-free
water is prepared and containerized in the laboratory, transported to the site,
ti and handled and transported in the same manner as the groundwater samples.
A-5 Standard Operating Procedures for Using Photoionization Detector(PIDI: The PID
is calibrated in accordance with the manufacture's recommendations prior to use in the field.
Upon arrival at the project site, the PID is used to monitor background concentrations of
organic vapors in the atmosphere at the site. The background concentrations are measured
in a location upwind and removed as possible from sources of organic vapors on the site.
When background concentrations of organic vapors register as "0.0" on the PID, subsequent
readings of "0.0" registered from samples tested in the field are recorded as "ND" (not
F detected). When background concentrations of organic vapors register at some quantity
above "0.0", subsequent readings registered from samples tested in the field -at or below this
value are recorded as "B/G" (background).
A-6 Standard Operating
p g Procedures for Performing Head Space Ana1,YSIS} Head space
analysis is performed using a photoionization detector (PID) or a drager tube. A soil
sample is placed in a sealed glass container or plastic bag, agitated, and placed in a warm
-+ atmosphere. After approximately 15 minutes, which is generally sufficient for some of the
volatiles to escape from the soil, the PID probe or tip of the drager tube is inserted into the
container or the bag and air above the sample is pumped into the PID or drager tube. The
highest concentration of organic vapors recorded by the PID or the drager tube reading will
be recorded.
L.f
L.t
l.i
I
L
i
fi
4.i
t
b
ii
1 .L
