3 E & E START Field Activities
E & E START performed field sampling activities in accordance with the FSP dated August
2010 and approved by the U.S. EPA Quality Assurance Office on December 10, 2010. The
approved FSP was assigned U.S. EPA Quality Assurance Program document control number
BNFD0424SV2. Photographic documentation of the investigation is included in Appendix B.
On January 18 through 21, 2011, the START conducted the sampling and data gathering
activities at the subject property. A subcontracted drilling contractor, RSI Drilling, mobilized to
the property on January 18, 2011 and conducted subsurface soil and groundwater sampling from
11 boring locations using direct push drilling methods.
3.1 Deviations from FSP
The following deviations from the FSP (E & E 201Oa) resulted from changes made during the
field investigation in response to field observations and conditions:
• The FSP indicated that the groundwater soil samples would be collected from all 12 of
the boring locations; however, two borings (EC2-03 and EC2-12)were dry when drilled
to 56ft bgs, and only soil samples were collected at these locations. Boring EC2-11,
which was planned to be located inside the fire station, was not drilled due to the drill rig
being too large to fit inside the fire station garage and the fire station being too active
with fire engines to disrupt their work.
• The FSP indicated that soil vapor samples would be collected at two locations, EC2-11
and EC2-12. EC2-11 was located inside the fire station garage but due to the constant
activity of trucks inside the garage this sample was not collected. EC2-11 was to be
collected above the location of the former gasoline UST; however, a large fork lift was
broken down above the former UST location and it could not be moved; therefore, no soil
vapor sample was collected.
• The FSP indicated that a duplicate groundwater sample (EC2-W-109) would be collected
at the EC2-9 location. However, there was not enough groundwater to collect the
duplicate sample at this location and it was not collected.
3.2 Sampling
The following sections describe the sampling conducted from January 18 to 21, 2011.
3.2.1 Surface and Subsurface Soil Sampling
START collected 11 surface soil samples, 44 subsurface soil samples, and six duplicate soil
samples from 11 borehole locations. The borehole locations are shown on Figure 3 (Appendix
A). After collection, all samples were placed in coolers and kept chilled on ice for storage and
shipment to the analytical laboratories. All soil samples were collected in accordance with the
3-1
