3.1 SOIL SAMPLING
A total of 6 soil borings (SB-I through SB-6) were driven on 3 December 2009, with a
truck mounted mobile Geoprobe® boring rig using nominal 2-inch outside diameter
Geoprobe® casing rods. The soil sampler was driven using a hydraulically actuated
Geoprobe®sample rod with a 48-inch acetate sampling tube inserted within the casing rod.
Soil borings were continuously cored when capable. Soil boring SB-1 was advanced to a
total depth of 23 below ground surface (BGS), borings SB-2 and SB-3 were advanced to a
total depth of 12 feet BGS, boring SB-4 was advanced to a total depth of 16 feet BGS,
boring SB-5 was advanced to a total depth of 21 feet BGS, and boring SB-6 was advanced
to a total depth of 16 feet BGS. A portion (approximately 2-inch section) of each sample
recovered was field screened with a photoionization detector(PID). Soil samples SB-1 at
12, 16, 19, and 23 feet BGS and SB-6 at 12 and 16 feet BGS resulted in an elevated PID
reading. See Figure 3 for boring logs.
Soil samples chosen for laboratory analytical submission were trimmed flush with the end
of the sleeve, the ends covered with Teflon" film, and then sealed with plastic end caps.
Each sample was labeled and placed into a pre-cooled ice chest at a temperature of
approximately 4°C during transportation to the laboratory. Proper chain-of-custody
protocol was followed at all times.
4.0 CHEMICAL ANALYSIS
A total of 10 soil samples were submitted for chemical analysis. Each soil sample was
analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-g), total petroleum
hydrocarbons as kerosene (TPH-k), and total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPH-d)
by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 8015B, benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) compounds by EPA Method SW8021B. The fuel
oxygenates tert-butyl alcohol (TBA), methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), di-isopropyl ether
(DIPE), ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE), tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME), and 1, 2
Dichloroethane and 1, 2 Dibromoethane were analyzed by EPA Method 8260B. Total
lead was analyzed by EPA Method 6010B.
4.1 ANALYTICAL RESULTS
Analytical results revealed soil samples collected from boring locations SB-1 and SB-6
contained elevated levels of TPH-k. Soil sample SB-1 at 12, 19, and 23 feet resulted in
concentrations of TPH-k at 0.9 mg/kg, 26 mg/kg, and 1300 mg/kg respectively. Soil
sample SB-6 at 12 and 16 feet resulted in concentrations of TPH-k at 0.33 mg/kg and 120
mg/kg respectively. All other soil samples were reported with concentrations of
contaminants of concern below their respective detection limits. See Table 1 for soil
sample analytical results.
