Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
Re: Site code 11.02; City of_Stockton, Smith Canal Pumping
Plant, - Fontana Avenue, Stockton, CA
Dear Darlene:
I am writing to address the comments and questions -presented. in
your July 26, 1990 letter.
1. Question: Illustrate the lateral/vertical plume of
contamination for- groundwater and soil. Indicate
where the "zero line" is located on a top
view/cross-sectional diagram of the site.
Response: Additional- investigation .is required' before- a
zero line of soil and groundwater contamination
can --be determined. , At the present time
groundwater contamination- is- limited to the. areas
- around MW-3- and MW-4.
2. Question: The bottom- borehole _samples should have been
- ------
analyzed--to support "zero -li-n. e" in the vertical
_ -.. . :direction.
Response: Soil samples collected below the water table are
generally not submitted for analysis. Because
--:.. . fuel hydrocarbons are lighter than water and will
not disseminate very far beneath the- -water table,
- - soil samples from- below the water --table are not
representative of_ soil contamination conditions. -
Any soil contamination below the -water table
would be :addressed in a groundwater assessment
and would be detected in the water samples.
t
t
1710 MAIN STREET. • ESCALON,CA-95320 • (209) 838-3507
FRESNO,CA(209) 222-3495 • RENO, NV(702) 788-6830
