Mr. Jerry Lile
July 17, 2000
Page 5
Area 15
9) Elevated concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline were
detected in soil samples from borings 156-6, -8, and -9. These borings were advanced
at an area where geophysical anomalies were observed. These anomalies suggested
the possibility of an underground storage tank (UST). The detection of elevated levels
of gasoline further suggest that a tank might be located at the observed geophysical
anomalies. Gasoline concentrations in soil increase with depth at boring 156-9. The
deepest soil sample collected from boring 156-9 contained TPH as gasoline at a
concentration of 8,500 mg/kg. The results for this 15 foot sample from boring 156-9
indicates the possibility that residual contaminants may be present at deeper depths
and groundwater is possibly contaminated. It may also be possible that free product is
floating on the water table at 156-9
Recommendation
The GSU recommends that a backhoe be used to look for an UST at the
Geophysical anomalies. During excavation removal of contaminated soil should
be done to minimize further groundwater degradation. Assessment of
groundwater quality should be considered for the 156-9 location. The GSU also
recommends that the boring logs for borings 15B-6 through -9 and recent
investigation borings conducted for Area 16 be included in the RI.
If you have any questions or require additional information regarding this matter, please
telephone me at (916) 255-3709.
C:\OFFICE\WPWIN\WPDOCS\WPSUITEW ORSHRI.WPD
