(AGE).
The CAP describes the site stratigraphy to include a vadose zone with relatively high clay
and silt content extending 17 feet below surface grade (bsg) into the saturated zone.
Ground water elevation data in the 4`h QMR 2006 indicates ground water to be at
approximately 13 to 16 feet bgs. This data indicates little coarse soil between the vadose
zone and the proposed sparge depths . AGE evaluated remedial alternatives including
excavation , ground water extraction (GWE), and soil vapor extraction enhanced by in-situ
air sparging (SVE/IAS) . AGE concluded that SVE/IAS is likely to be the most cost—
effective remediation technology for your site.
EHD cannot yet concur with AGE that SVE/IAS is likely to be the most cost effective
remediation technology for your site. EHD is concerned that the lack of coarse soil
between the vadose zone and the sparge point depths will inhibit efficient migration of
sparged air to the extraction wells. EHD recommends a pilot test be conducted for
SVE/IAS. EHD also recommends that GWE be evaluated as for a clean up technology
and that an aquifer pumping test be conducted if GWE is feasible .
Submit a work plan for a pilot test for SVE/IAS or GWE remediation to the EHD by April
23, 2006. If you have any questions, please contact Frank Girardi at (209) 953-7868 .
Donna Heran , REHS , Director
Environmental Health Department
Frank Girardi, Senior REHS Nuel C.
