NLS§ 2.3, SSS§ 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 4.6. There are no domestic or irrigation wells on the subject
Parcel. Irrigation water is supplied by an irrigation district.
Calculation of Alkalinity Requirement for Nitrification
The nitrate-nitrogen loading to the underlying groundwater is contingent upon the environmental
factors required for nitrification to occur. These conditions include soil pore-space oxygen
content, soil temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, cation exchange capacity,
and alkalinity. Alkalinity in wastewater effluent is derived from future on-site well water, in
addition to the introduction of wastes. Nitrification consumes approximately 7.1 mg of alkalinity
for every mg of ammonia-nitrogen (NH4-N) oxidized. Nitrification of the average Total Nitrogen
(TN) concentration of 62 mg/L, as determined on Page 5, would require: 62 mg/L NH4-N x 7.1
mg CaCO3 = 440 mg/L alkalinity. The alkalinity concentration in the underlying groundwater is
unknown, but assuredly below 440 ppm. Therefore, there is an insufficient alkalinity in the
domestic water for complete nitrification to readily proceed without the introduction of wastes
along with the alkalinity in the soil environment.
E. SURFACE WATER INFORMATION
Storm water management will be on-site, flowing into the almond orchard surrounding the Ag
Building project. Percolating rainwater may provide an indeterminable water table dilution effect
to percolating wastewater effluent.
Climatic Data: Rainfall
NLS§ 3.2. The filter bed for the project has not been designed to take advantage of
evapotranspiration. Consequently, evapotranspiration (Eto) data from the California Irrigation
Management Information System (CIMIS) is not applicable information. Only when plant life,
specifically a grass, is allowed to grow over the filter bed area and is periodically mowed to
alleviate nitrate loading, can CIMIS data be used. Consequently, the only applicable data that
pertains to this project in the nitrate loading equation and calculations below, is rainfall for this
specific Tracy area.
III. NITRATE LOADING STUDY FINDINGS
A. WASTEWATER FLOW VOLUME PROJECTIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS
Wastewater Flow Volume Projections
Typically, loading projections for commercial facilities are based on the maximum anticipated
wastewater flows generated by occupied people that occur daily, weekly, monthly, or for singular
events.
Page -4-
Chesney Consulting
