ito the chemicals found onsite to date are presented below in terms of the
following types of occupational exposure limits.'
LPEL - Permissible Exposure Limit
C - Ceiling
TLV - Threshold Limit Value
TLV-STEL - Short Term Exposure Limit
OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs) and ACGIH Threshold Limit Values
(TLVs) , time weighted averages (TWAs) are defined'las concentrations for an 8-hour
work day, 40-hour work week to which almost all workers can be repeatedly exposed
without suffering adverse health effects.
Short Term Exposure- Limit (STEL) is defined as the concentration to which
workers can be exposed for short timeeriods without irritation tissue
P damage,
or narcosis sufficient to likely cause impairment of self-rescue or precipitate
accidental injury. The STEL is a 15-minute time-w'eight'ed average that should not
be exceeded at any time during the work day.
A ceiling value (c) is a concentration that should not be exceeded at any
time in any work day.
Gasoline
t PEL/TLV — 300 ppm TLV-STEL s 500 ppm
Gasoline is an eye and throat irritant apt levels around the PEL, and
causes narcotic effects (with symptomsincluding headache, nausea,
dizziness, and blurred vision) at higher levels'. Long term exposure can
effect liver and kidney function. Some studies indicate a potential for
gasoline to be an animal carcinogen, b this has not been fully
established. Because gasoline is a mixture of varying proportions of
dozens of hydrocarbons, a mean odor threshold has not been determined.
Used Motor Oil
Crankcase oil consists of several classes of hydrocarbon including linear
and branched alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkylbenzenes, naphthalenes and
. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons RAW . It is likely to be immobile in
soil •and degrade slowly over time through 'weattering and biodegradation
(USAF-IRP, 1990) .
CHEVMERC.H50 11
