4.0 Hazard Evaluation
I The
. potential hazards to personnel working at the Site during the field activities have been
+# identified as chemical, physical and biological hazards. Table`4-1 is a summary of the
I
activity-specific hazards for this project.
4.1 Chemical Hazards
Table 4-2 presents general information on the COPCs at the Site. The information includes
i
exposure limits and recommendations, routes of exposure, ionization potentials, and typical signs
and symptoms of exposure. Based on previous sampling activities at the Site, contaminants exist
i in subsurface soils. The primary chemical hazards are exposure to TPH in soils. The presence
of BTEX and MTBE is unlikely. Appropriate PPE will be used to protect against potential
exposure.
i
Air monitoring will be conducted using+a photoionization detector or similar instrument that will
j screen for petroleum hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons.
Attachment C contains printouts from the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, which will
I provide additional information on the COPCs.
i
4.2 Physical Hazards
Potential physical hazards associated with the fieldwork to be conducted at the Site may include
dangers associated with flying object impact, moving equipment impact, striking possible
underground utilities, heat stress, lifting injuries, slipping, tripping or falling, excessive noise
. g ,
and excessive respirable dust hazards. F
4.2.1 Vehicle Traffic
Employees may be exposed to vehicle accident hazards associated with the operation of vehicles
during the project. To control these hazards, the following safety requirements shall be enforced.
;
• Seat belts shall be worn ANYTIME a vehicle is'in motion, regardless of speed or
distance to be traveled.
• Transportation of personnel in a truck bed is prohibited.
• The basic speed law shall be followed at all times. Vehicles shall never be 4
' operated at a speed that is not safe for the conditions (i.e., road surface, traffic,
I
visibility, weather, etc.)..
" I
sacOP-N:lConsullingldolalSharedlPro
yeas WJ71778407-m.doc 4- j
i !2/7/00
}
