PROPOSED SOIL PROBE SAMPLING PROCEDURES
L Soil samples from the soil probe will be collected using hydraulically powered machines that use a
combination of static force and percussion (Direct Push)to advance sampling tools into the subsurface.
LThese machines are typically mounted on pick-up trucks and small tractors.
Soil samples will be collected using either Geoprobe Macro-Core or Large-Bore samplers, or similar
1. sampling equipment The Macro-Core sampler recovers 1.5-inch diameter soil samples in 2-, 3-, or 4-foot
long tubes. The Large-Bore sampler recovers 1-inch diameter soil samples in 24bot long tubes. The
tubes are constructed of the clear plastic, Cellulose Acetate Butyrate(CAB). Samples to be retained will
be cut from the tube in 6-inch lengths, capped, labeled, and placed in a chilled cooler.
Organic vapors from selected soil samples will be measured.using a photoionization detector(PID). A
small volume of soil from a discrete depth is placed into a polyethylene bag, which is sealed with
headspace. After approximately ten minutes, the PID probe is inserted into the bag and the organic vapor
concentration, in parts per million(ppm), is measured.
Prior to the advance of each probe, the sampling equipment will be decontaminated. The equipment will
be thoroughly washed with a trisodlum phosphate(TSP)or equivalent solution and rinsed with clean water
between each sampling event.
L A PG&E geologist or engineer, under the supervision of a State of California Registered Geologist will I
9b9 g Pe eg o9 09
L and sample each probe. Soil descriptions will be noted according to the Unified Soil Classification System
(ASTM D-2487), which includes soil type, color, and moisture content. Organic vapor measurements will
be noted on the logs. Additionally, any field observations that may indicate possible chemical
contamination, such as the presence of man-made materials, unusual soil discoloration, or unusual odors,
will be included in the logs.
L
L
L
L
L
402.331-04.10.dx
L
