24 October 2005
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0500
3.0. MONITORING WELL INSTALLATION,DEVELOPMENT AND SURVEY
Eleven ground water monitoring wells(MW-3 8 through MW-48)were installed on between 21 June
and 07 July 2005, developed on 11, 12 and 13 July 2005 and surveyed on 12 July 2005.
3.1. Drilling and Sampling
The eleven pilot borings for monitoring wells MW-38 through MW-48 were advanced using a CME-
75HT or CME 95 drill rig, equipped with 8.25-inch diameter hollow-stem augers. The drill rig and
three-man crew were supplied by Cascade Drilling Inc. Auger returns generated by drilling were
containerized in plastic for treatment and while waste rinse water was stored in properly labeled
DOT-approved model 17H 55-gallon drums stored on-site.
Soil samples were collected in borings MW-39, MW-43 and MW-47 ahead of the drill bit using a
California modified split-spoon sampler loaded with three pre-cleaned 2-inch by 6-inch brass
sleeves. The samples were collected from the three monitoring well pilot borings at five-foot
intervals, beginning at 5 feet below surface grade(bsg)using a 140-pound hammer to advance the
sampler. The number of blows required to advance the sampler over each 6-inch increment of the
18-inch sampling interval were registered yet not recorded. Sampling equipment was washed in an
Alconox solution and double rinsed with water prior to each sampling run to minimize cross-
contamination.
For each sample, both ends of the leading or other selected sleeve were covered with Teflon sheets,
capped and sealed with tape. The samples were properly labeled, stored on ice and pending any
necessary analytical work.
3.2. Logging
Soil was extruded from the remaining brass sleeves in borings MW- 39, MW-43 and MW-47 and
soil was then visually described on the boring log in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification
System(see Appendix A).Cutting were screened for the presence of organic vapor using an organic
vapor meter(OVM) equipped with a photo-ionization detector(PID: Thermo Environmental 580,
10.0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene).
3.3. Well Completions
Pilot borings were completed as ground water monitoring wells using two-inch diameter PVC casing
• with 0.020-inch slotted screen.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
