J 1
' EXHIBIT "An
Materials that will be disposed from the laboratories into the
separate chemical septic system.
On an annual basis we use and dispose of the following chemicals. All
of these chemicals will be diluted with water before disposal using
the listed dilution factor.
Chemical Amount 'rper year Dilution factor
formalin (37% formaldehyde) 110 gal 1:20-1: 100
ethanol (95%) 55 gal 1:3-1:5
acetic acid * 50 ml 20: 1
hydrochloric acid * 1 gal 20: 1
nitric acid * 0.5 gal 20: 1
carbolic acid (phenol) * less than 1 gram more than 100: 1
chromium sulfate * less than 1 gram more than 100: 1
isopropyl alcohol * 1 gal 20: 1
If necessary, those items denoted with an * could be collected and
disposed of separately at the DFG's Water Pollution Control Laboratory
in Rancho Cordova. Also the project that uses these chemicals may not
be doing this work after this year.
The formalin is diluted to either a 5% or 10% solution before it is
used. The ethanol is used full strength in most cases and diluted to
70% in other cases. These materials are used to preserve biological
specimens and at present there are no reasonable alternatives. When
the material is disposed of in the laboratory, it is done so by
extensive rinsing of the biological samples (this includes both the
sample specimens and a large quantity of debris) and subsequent
flushing of the drains. A minimal amount of the biological samples
will be disposed of in the special septic system as a fine material
that is inadvertently washed out of the sorting screen.
SUBMITTED BY STOCKTON OFFICE
CALIFORNIA FISH & GAME
TO S . S . MOORE
FEBRUARY 13th. 1991
