The report
summarizes chemical and water elevation data obtained since 1987, including results
associated with samples recently collected on August 25 and September 25 2000
(3Q00).
The report shows that benzene (3.5 pg/1) was detected in one of the wells sampled
during 3Q00 (MW-2). MTBE was detecten in samples obtained from seven of the
wells sampled, at concentrations ranging from 1.3 µg/l (MW-4) to 35,000 µg/l (MW-
8).
BP's 12 June 2000 letter to the Regional Board included a figure depicting a vapor
recovery line proximate to wells MW-1, MW-2 and MW-8. The vapor recovery line
connects the product loading rack at the former BP terminal to an offsite vapor
recovery unit located at the nearby Shell Products terminal. I understand that the
vapor recovery line was used when BP operated the terminal from 1989 until August
1994. Tosco also operated the vapor recovery line until October 1998, when the
terminal was sold to ST Services. ST Services reports that only diesel fuel has been
distributed from the facility during its operations, so there- np need for vapor
recovery equipment at the loading rack. ST Services reports por recovery
line was closed at a valve, and that it is still in place. B1
Jv
It is noteworthy that MTBE and TPHg concentrations declined Wustantially after
operation of the vapor recovery line stopped. MW-2 has sampleg."'he highest MTBE
et
