Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
Subject: Nor-Cal Beverage Company, 1800 E. Fremont St., Stockton, California
Dear Ms. Hinson:
This letter is in response to the CRWQCB's September 22, 1.993 request for more information
on the groundwater gradient and wells in the vicinity of the above referenced site (Figure 1).
This report summarizes previous investigations at the site as well as data compiled from the
Department of Water Resources (DWR) Central District Office, San Joaquin County Public
Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHSIEHD) records, and San Joaquin County
Flood Control and Water Conservation District maps.
SITE BACKGROUND
The site was the location of three underground fuel storage tanks that were removed in January
1991. The tanks were used to store leaded and unleaded gasoline and possible diesel.
Laboratory analysis of samples collected during tank removal indicated the presence of
petroleum hydrocarbons in soils within the tank excavation (Table 1). Locations of the former
tanks and soil samples are shown in Figure 2.
Source removal excavation was conducted in March 1991. Confirmation samples were analyzed
for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX), total petroleum hydrocarbons as
gasoline (TPHG) and total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHD). Analytical results (Table
_ 1) indicated that contamination remained near the middle of the former 10,000 gallon tank _
location and beneath the center of the former 500 gallon tank location.
In May 1991, a groundwater monitoring well (MW-1) was installed in the approximate center
of the backfilled tank pit. Soil samples were collected during well installation. Analytical
results are summarized in Table 1. Groundwater was encountered at approximately 69 feet
L1293.FNL 1 r
