Six remediation events were conducted between
October 2004 and April 2005; another event was conducted in June 2005 but results from that event
were not available to be included in the Report. Analytical data from the first six events reported
concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) in influent air samples ranging
from 8,000 ppmv in the initial sample collected in October, to non-detect in one of three samples
collected in March. ATC calculated that approximately 425 pounds of TPHg were removed during
these six events. Preliminary data from the June 2005 event was submitted to SJCIEHD subsequent
to the submittal of the Report. Concentrations of TPHg reported from three air samples collected in
June 2005 ranged from 910,000-1,000,000 ppmv.
In the Report, ATC recommends preparation of a work plan to install confirmation soil borings.
Removal of 425 pounds of contaminants over 6 events yields an average removal rate of about 70
pounds per 40 hours of extraction over 5 days. The June 2005 air samples were very highly impacted.
SJCIEHD cannot approve advancing confirmation borings while the intermittent SVE operation is
yielding such high contaminant mass recovery rates. Remediation at this site must continue.
SJCIEHD believes that full-time operation of the SVE system coupled with insitu air sparging (IAS)
may beneficially accelerate remediation of soil, and aid remediation of impacted groundwater.
Prepare and submit to SJCIEHD no later than October 7, 2005 a report comparing the feasibility, costs
and technical evaluation of implementing full-time SVE and iAS remediation versus continuing the
intermittent SVE operation, In the meantime, reinitiate immediately the intermittent SVE operation.
If you have any questions please call Lori Duncan at (29)468-0337.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Department
Lori Duncan, Senior REHS Nuel C.
