FIELD PROCEDURES
SOIL SAMPLING AT TANK REMOVALS
Site Safety Plan
The Site Safety Plan describes the basic safety requirements for field activities at the site. The Site
' Safety Plan is applicable to personnel of Lee & Pierce, Inc. (L&P) and to subcontractors of L&P.
Personnel scheduled to work at the site will be briefed on the contents of the Site Safety Plan before
work begins. A copy of the Site Safety Plan will be kept at the work site and will be available for
reference by appropriate parties during work at the site. The onsite representative of L&P will be
designated the Site Safety Officer.
' Sample Collection during Tank Removal
Soil samples will be collected as soon as possible after removal of the tank. Where feasible, all
preparations for soil sampling will be made prior to tank removal. Soil samples collected from a
backhoe bucket or directly from the excavation floor will be collected in a thin-walled stainless steel
or brass cylinder at least three inches long by one inch in diameter. From 3 to 24 inches of soil will
be removed from the immediate surface area where the sample is to be taken and the cylinder then
pounded into the soil with a wooden mallet, bulk density driver, or other decontaminated driving
device. No head space will be present in the cylinder once the sample is collected. Care will be
taken to avoid contamination of both the inside and outside of the cylinder as well as its contents.
During sampling, latex gloves will be worn to prevent cross contamination with other samples. One
pair of disposable gloves will be dedicated to each sample collected.
Samplinz from Soil Piles or Shallow Soil Pits
' Soil samples will be collected and transported from excavated material in the manner described in
the previous section, however, a backhoe will not be utilized. If composite samples are collected,
two brass cylinders will be collected for every 50 cubic yards of material to be sampled unless
' otherwise specified by the lead regulatory agency. The samples will be composited by the state
certified analytical laboratory personnel prior to testing.
Sample Labeline and Handline
Soil samples selected for laboratory analysis are removed from the sampler and quickly sealed in
' their brass sleeves with Teflon sheets and plastic caps. The respective sample containers are labeled
in the field with the job number, sample location, depth if applicable, and date, and promptly placed
in iced storage for transport to the laboratory. Chain of Custody Records are initiated in the field by
the geologist and accompany the samples to a laboratory certified by the State of California to
perform the analyses requested.
SOP_FLDTANK
