Adsorbed Gasoline Mass-Volume Calculations
• GREWAL'S MARKET
4100 East Fremont Street, Stockton CA
Assumptions:
• Utilizing Figures 5,7 and 9,the mass distribution of gasoline concentrations greater than 1,000 mg/kg can be
approximated utilizing the equation for a coned-ellipse shape.
The volume of a coned ellipse can be calculated by the formula:
V,•.=(long diam.)(short diam.)(0.7854)(1is height),where"a"is the long diameter of the coned
ellipse, "b" is the short diameter and"c"is the height.
The mass distribution of gasoline concentrations greater than 1.0 mg/kg can be approximated utilizing the
equation for a cylindrical ellipse.
The volume of a cylindrical ellipse can be calculated by the formula:
' Vmm=(long diam.)(short diam.)(0.7854)(height),where"a"is the long diameter of the cylindrical
ellipse, "b"is the short diameter and"c"is the height.
The average TPH-g concentration was utilized for gasoline-impacted area greater than 1,000 milligrams per kilogram
' (mg/kg)and for the gasoline-impacted area greater than 1 mg/kg;the average was calculated by summing the detected
TPH-g concentrations for each area and dividing by the total number of detections. The average TPH-g concentration
for the area greater than 1,000 mg/kg was calculated to be 1,900 mg/kg;the average TPH-g concentration for the area
greater than 1 mg/kg was calculated to be 165 mg/kg.
10
GASOLINE-IMPACTED AREA GREATER THAN 1,000 MG/KG -Approximate volume of gasoline-impacted
' Soil(VGA5JOOa):
The estimated coned ellipse shape for gasoline-impacted area greater than 1,000 mg/kg: a z 28 ft,b = 10 ft,c= 10.5 ft
tVGAsjaao=(28 ft)(10#1)(0.7854)(1/3 10.5 ft)4 770 fl(lyd3/27f) R 28.5 yd'
Converting 28.5 yd3 to cm3(i.e. lyd3=764,555cm3)yields approximately 21,789,818 cm3.Using 1.9 g/cm3 as the weight
' of soil,the total weight of contaminated soil is approximately 41,400,653 g.
Using 1,900 mg/kg as the"average"concentration in the area of TPH-g impacted soil,the mass can be calculated to be:
' weight of soil •average concentration -*41,400,653 g • 0.00 1900=78,661 g of gasoline
' Converting grams of gasoline to volume of gasoline(gallons)using density of gasoline equal to 0.75 (estimate)
78,661 g of gasoline 0.75 g/cm'= 104,882 crn3
104,882 cm3 - (1 gallon 3,785 cm3) = 27.7 gallons of gasoline
Converting gallons of gasoline to pounds of gasoline yields:
' 27.7 gallons of gas-0.16 gal(estimate)of gas/lbs. of gas = 173 pounds of gasoline
0 Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
