17 July 2002
AGE-NC Project No. 97-0327
' 2.3. SAMPLE LOGGING
During drilling activities, soil sample duplicates were monitored for the presence of organic vapor
using an organic vapor meter equipped with a photo-ionization detector (PID: Thermo
' Environmental 580A, 10.0 eV, calibrated to 1sobutylene) and were visually described on boring logs
in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Boring logs from P-10, P-11,
' P-12 and MW-4 are included as Appendix A.
' 2.4. GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION
Grab ground water samples were collected from soil borings P-10 and P-11 using new, clean,
' disposable plastic bailers. The augers were advanced to total depth, then pulled out approximately
5 feet to allow water to enter the boring. The bailer was lowered into the boring through the augers
and allowed to fill with water. Samples were transferred into three 40-m1 EPA-approved VOA vials
' containing 0.5 ml 18%hydrochloric acid as a sample preservative and into one 1-liter amber bottle
without sample preservative. Ground water sample containers were labeled with soil boring
. designation, date, time, and samplers initials.
4 '
A grab groundwater sample le was collected from P-12 utilizing hydro-punch technology. A Geoprobe
p
water sampling assembly was advanced to a depth approximately four feet below the water table
utilizing hollow steel rods. The hollow steel rods were then retracted upward approximately four
feet, thereby exposing a PVC screen to ground water. A bailer fitting was then placed on the end of
3/a-inch diameter polyethylene tubing, inserted through the rod assembly into the exposed screen,
' through which water was manually pumped. Sufficient sample was collected from borings P-12 to
fill three 40-m1 EPA-approved VOA vials containing 0.5 ml 18% hydrochloric acid as a sample
preservative and one 1-liter amber bottle without sample preservative. Ground water sample
containers were labeled with probe boring designation, date, time, and samplers initials.
Each preserved sample was logged on a chain-of-custody form, placed in a chilled container and
' transported to a DHS-certified laboratory for analysis for:
• TPH-g and TPH-d by EPA Method 5030/8015M and LUFT/EPA Method 801513;
1
• BTEX with MTBE by EPA Method 8020; and
•
Methanol;ethanol, 1,2-DCA,-EDB,-TBA,DIPE, ETBE,TAME and MTBE by EPA.Metho_d
8260 Modified.
' Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
1
