Wastewater gravity discharges from the DAF clarifier to a pH adjustment tank.
Typical wastewater pH ranges from 10.5 s.u. — 11.5 s.u. A pH monitoring system
and controller delivers sulfuric acid as needed to reduce pH levels to below the
current wastewater discharge permit limit of 10.0 s.u. typically between 8.0 s.u.
and 9.5 s.u. After pH adjustment, treated wastewater gravity discharges through
a flume and wastewater sampling point. Flow monitoring and pH recording
devices are located in this area to provide continuous monitoring of the
wastewater discharge to the sanitary sewer.
Solids generated from the clarifier will be treated with a filter aid to enhance
dewatering. A 1,480 gallon sludge conditioning tank is utilized to transfer sludge
to a 25 cuft. plate and frame filter press to increase solids concentration from
approximately 1.5 percent to 45 percent. The filtrate will drain to a 935 gallon
oil/water separator. Lighter-than-water non-aqueous phase liquid from the solids
filter press will be contained in 55-gallon drums. This material is recycled or
disposed by licensed approved vendors such as (Patriot Environmental,
CleanHarbors or Safety Kleen). Wastewater filtrate from the filter press
operation will be returned to the wastewater pit for reprocessing. The dewatered
solids are classified as Non-RCRA hazardous and transported by licensed
approved vendor for disposal at Waste Management Kettleman Hills landfill.
System Operating Guidelines:
Initial and date all recording charts daily prior to operation. Change charts if
necessary at beginning of each week. Store/file all chart recordings.
Clean pH probes daily.
Calibrate daily with buffer solutions 7 & 10. Maintain log documenting name of
individual cleaning, and calibrating.
Plug-in power supply to pH acid pump located at side of pH tank. This should be
disconnected each night at shut-down for safety purposes. Always wear
appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) when working around acid and
all other chemicals.
Check DAF filter basket strainer and clean as needed.
Verify equalization tank level and start operation of system when equalization
tank is at 22.0 ft. Turn on all equipment identified on the WW panel "ON" Check
skimmer drive speed.
