Glossary <br /> • <br /> REFERENCE TERMS <br /> Acid Any chemical which undergoes dissociation in water with the <br /> formation of hydrogen ions. Acids turn litmus paper red and <br /> have pH values less than 7. Acids can cause severe burns. <br /> Air diaphragm pump A pump that uses compressed air to drive a <br /> diaphragm which forces liquid through the <br /> pump. <br /> Alkali Any chemical substance which forms <br /> soluble soaps with fatty acids. Alkalis are <br /> also referred to as bases. Alkalis turn litmus <br /> paper blue and has a pH greater than 7. <br /> Alkalis may cause severe burns. Air diaphragm pump <br /> Amperage A unit of electrical current equivalent to a steady current <br /> produced by on volt applied across a resistance of on ohm. <br /> Analytical reports A report from a certified lab on the water or wastes generated <br /> from the wastewater treatment system. This report will often <br /> include results on oil and grease, TSS, COD, BOD, metals, etc. <br /> Bubbler flow meter A type of flow meter that is used in , ,�. <br /> combination with a flume to provide <br /> accurate flow measurement. <br /> Flow meter <br /> Bulk tank A large capacity tank generally used to <br /> process or store wastewater treatment <br /> chemicals. <br /> Calibration To fix, correct, or adjust any process <br /> equipment to within proper specifications. <br /> Chain of custody form A form that is used to insure proper <br /> handling of laboratory samples.
