Glossary
OF
REFERENCE TERMS
Coagulant A chemical polymer used to neutralize the charge of suspended
solids.
Coalesced The process of bringing the oil together to be removed in the
oil/water separator.
Compliance monitoring The collection and evaluation of data, including self monitoring
reports. This data is used to verify whether pollutant
concentrations are within the discharge limits.
Composite sample A representative water or wastewater sample made up of
individual smaller samples taken at periodic intervals
throughout a specified time period.
Concentration The amount of solute present in proportion to the total solution.
A measure of the average density of pollutants or other
constituents usually specified in terms of mass per unit volume
of water.
DAF Dissolved Air Floatation—a process where
air is dissolved into a liquid that is to be
treated, forming small bubbles that attach to
suspended solids. These bubble, along with
the suspended solids, then float to the
surface and are removed by skimming.
DAF skid
Day tank Any storage tank that is used to hold a
smaller quantity of chemicals than what is held in a bulk tank. Generally day tanks holdbetween one and five days' worth of
chemicals. 711
Day tank
Dewatering equipment Equipment that is used to extract a portion of
the water present in a sludge, producing a
dewatered filter cake which is then disposed
of in a landfill. Two common types are the
plate &frame and the rotary drum filter.
APPENDIX PAGE 13
