N001 V
Binayak Acharya Project 2074-001.01
May 18, 1995
Page 2
Results of the soil analyses showed that petroleum hydrocarbons and VOCs were only
detected in one soil sample (boring MWA at 11 to 11.5 feet BGS). Petroleum
hydrocarbons quantified as hydraulic oil and as mineral spirits were detected in this sample
at concentrations of 22,300 and 840 mg/kg, respectively. VOCs were detected in the
sample, including 0.0034 mg/kg toluene and 0.910 mg/kg 2-chlorotoluene. PCE was also
detected at 0.113 mg/kg. The remaining soil samples did not contain detectable amounts
of total petroleum hydrocarbons or VOCs. Results of soil analyses are presented in
Table 1.
The results of the groundwater analyses showed that no petroleum hydrocarbons or VOCs
were detected in the sample from well MW-1, except for 1.4 micrograms per liter (µg/1)
chloroform(Table 2).
BASELINE CONDITIONS
The sediments encountered in borings B-I and MW-1 are predominantly sands (with clay,
silt, or gravel). Boring MW-1 was terminated after encountering clay at a depth of 93 to
98 feet BGS. Depth to groundwater in well MW-1 was approximately 72 feet BGS during
November 1994.
The soil analyses show that the petroleum-hydrocarbon-impacted soil is limited to the
vicinity of boring MW-1 at approximately 11 feet BGS. No petroleum hydrocarbons or
VOCs were detected at or below 15 feet BGS in boring MWA or in any of the samples
from boring B-1. Boring B-1 is approximately 25 feet south of boring MW-1, indicating
there is limited lateral extent for the compounds found in MW-1 at 11 feet (Figure 2).
These analytical results, when considered in conjunction with the removal of the oil/water
separator and surrounding soil, indicate that there is limited soil impact.
The assessment of the soil and groundwater conditions adjacent to the former separator is
sufficient to evaluate the possible risks and remediation alternatives. Boring MW-1 was
placed at the end of the separator where the inlet piping is connected, a common location
of leaks. Therefore, the samples from this boring most likely represent a "worst-case"
condition of the soil in this area. EMCON does not believe that installing additional
borings on the east and west sides of the former separator is warranted based on existing
data.
J ASEC'f1MU0740010.1 BR-9511jt:2
