(AGE). The Report documents the soil results from
one soil boring that was sampled down to 52 feet below ground surface (bgs), where the GeoProbe®
encountered refusal. Although groundwater was not encountered, soil contamination (total petroleum
hydrocarbons, gasoline (TPHg); toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) was reported down to 40 feet bgs:
Constituent' 20 feet bgs 25 feet bgs 30 feet bgs 35 feet bgs 40 feet bgs 50 feet bgs
TPHg 11,000 3,900 4.2 160 <1.0 <1.0
toluene <5.0 3.1 0.025 0.29 <0.005 <0.005
eth lbenzene 11 7.5 0.10 0.47 <0.005 <0.005
xylenes 600 370 1 2.84 1 14.5 1 0.028 <0.01
1=soil concentration in milligrams/kilogram(mg/kg)
Lead scavengers and fuel oxygenates were not detected in soil. The Boring Log shows a silty, fine sand
unit exists below 42 feet bgs (no soil core recovered between 42 and 50 feet bgs), which represents a
more permeable zone than the shallower clays and silts. AGE stated in a phone conversation stated that
they believe groundwater is just below 50 feet bgs. The Report recommends further investigation of the
lateral and vertical extent of contamination, using a hollow stem auger drill rig to collect either grab
samples or install monitoring wells.
Comments:
As stated in my 5 August 2003 letter for a revised Workplan, the proposed additional site assessment
Workplan (Workplan) should include the following elements to adequately delineate petroleum
hydrocarbon contamination previously detected at the site:
1. At least five borings for vertical and lateral delineation of contamination. One boring should be
located between the former north and south USTs.
California Environmental Protection Agency
05 Recycled Paper
