The
locations of the wells are shown on Plate 1. The outer perimeter dewatering
wells will remain operational throughout the excavation and are not proposed
for abandonment at this time. These wells will be abandoned after completion
of remediation activities at the former Tillie Lewis Foods cannery in accord-
ance with the San Joaquin Local Health District regulations. The presently
proposed activities include the following:
1. Abandon the existing groundwater monitoring wells (KF-MW-1, 2, 3,
and MEI-MW-1, 2, 3) and the inner perimeter dewatering wells by
complete removal of well materials and gravel pack during excava-
tion for contaminated soil. The monitoring wells were completed to
depths of between 25 to 30 feet below ground surface. The inner
perimeter dewatering wells were completed to depths of about 30
feet below ground surface. The proposed excavation grade will be
at or below the base of the groundwater monitoring wells and the
inner perimeter dewatering wells.
2. Abandon all piezometers that extend below the proposed excavation
grade by grouting the wells in place. The piezometers were com-
pleted at depths ranging from 12 to 50 feet below ground surface.
Wells below the proposed excavation grade will be grouted from
bottom to top with a neat cement-bentonite grout. Shallow
piezometers that do not extend below the base of the proposed
excavation will be abandoned in ,the same manner as that proposed
for the groundwater monitoring wells and inner perimeter dewatering
wells (i.e. , complete removal of well materials and gravel pack
during excavation) .
