CENTRAL VALLEY REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL BOARD
INSPECTION REPORT
DATE PREPARED: 29 September 2005
DISCHARGER: Goldstone Land Company, Bear Creek Winery
LOCATION AND COUNTY: Lodi, San Joaquin County
CONTACT(S): Craig Rous, Vince Westphal
INSPECTION DATE: 20 September 2005
INSPECTED BY: Tim O'Brien, Mark List
ACCOMPANIED BY: Craig Rous,Vince Westphal
OBSERVATIONS AND COMMENTS:
Staff inspected the Bear Creek Winery prior to revising the site's Waste Discharge Requirements
(WDRs). No violations of the WDRs were observed and improvements to the wastewater system were
noted during the inspection.
The Discharger has made improvements to the land application area, dividing it into a series of checks to
allow more even application of the wastewater. Turf grass was being grown in a portion of the land
application area. The grass is cut and removed from the land for use as animal feed.
Pomace was stored in an area north and adjacent to the winery facility. The pomace is removed prior to
the onset of winter rain. The Discharger agreed to consider cropping the pomace storage area with a
winter crop to take up some nutrients that likely leach from the pomace.
The proposed land application areas, Vineyard Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 (see attached figure) appeared to
be well established and capable of receiving wastewater. Those land application areas will be addressed
in the forthcoming tentative WDRs.
The Discharger has replaced sodium hydroxide with potassium hydroxide to clean storage tanks. Use of
potassium hydroxide is preferable to the use of sodium hydroxide because potassium is more likely to be
taken up by crops as a micronutrient.
SUMMARY:
No violations were observed during the inspection.
Timothy R.
