Five (5) confirmatory soil samples (SB11), S132G, SB3E, SB4F and SB15) were collected from
the bottom of the north south, east and west corners of the elevator shaft, and the center
excavation borings, respectively, at the request of SJCPHS The four (4) corner samples
represent sidewall samples
The soil samples were taken with a Modified California Split Spoon Sampler lined with brass
sampling sleeves 2 inches in diameter by 6 inches long driven into the soil with a 70-pound slide
hammer After each sample was collected, it was presented to Inspector Sasson for review prior
to capping The ends of the sample sleeves were covered with teflon tape, capped with plastic
caps, sealed in plastic bags, stored on ice and delivered to the laboratory for analysis The soil
samples were described by a field geologist under the supervision of a California Registered
Geologist, in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS)
The confirmatory samples were transported to Curtis & Tompkins, Ltd (DHS ELAP Certificate
#1459) located in Berkeley, Califorma with standard chain of custody documentation Analysis
was requested on a 24-hour turnaround basis for the bottom samples and standard turn-around
on the shallow samples
Two (2) separate mobile field labs were used to field screen samples during the boring
operations These were Calscience Environmental Laboratories, Inc of Stanton, Califorma and
Sequoia Analytical of Sacramento, California Samples were submitted to these labs under the
same handling and documentary protocol as those sent to Curtis & Tompkins, Ltd Laboratory
analytical results for the soil excavation are provided in Appendix V
The analytical results on the confirmatory samples revealed concentrations of TPH in SB11) at
250 ppm and non-detected in the other four (4) samples Boring SB1 was extended only to 10
feet 6 inches based on a mobile lab screening result of non-detected in sample SB 1 C at 10 feet
The other four borings were between 15 feet 6 inches and 20 feet 6 inches deep
In addition to the confirmatory borings, four (4) additional 18-inch borings and six (6) 14-inch
in-fill borings were drilled to remove as much contaminated soil from beneath the elevator shaft
as possible These borings were advanced until mobile lab field screening results were less than
100 ppm TPH as hydraulic fluid by EPA Method 8015M
The results of the bottom samples from the remaining 18-inch borings were 770 ppm for SBSC,
89 ppm for SB6E, 1,600 ppm for SB7F and non-detected for SBBE The results for the 14-inch
borings were all non-detected for samples SB9B, SB10A, SB11B, SB12B and SB14B No
samples were taken in boring SB13 The bottom depths for these borings ranged from 15 feet
6 inches to 19 feet 6 inches
When mobile lab field screening data indicated sample results of less than 100 ppm TPH as
hydraulic fluid by EPA Method 8015M, the groundwater in the borings was pumped out with a
submersible pump in an effort to remove as much floating hydraulic fluid as possible from the
excavation Over 2,000 gallons of hydraulic fluid-contaminated groundwater was pumped out
CRC Environmental Risk Management Inc Project#3620-001-
i
George Bravante,Receiver 2233 Grand Canal Boulevard
January 19 1995 4 Stockton California
