Overall, xylenes appear to be more acute-N toxic than benzene or
' toluene. Human exposure to xylenes has occurred almost exclusively through inhalation.
Exposure to high air concentrations of xylenes produces acute effects that may include a flushing
' or reddening of the face, disturbed vision, dizziness, incoordination, L.)nfusion and coma, and
respiratory distress (Clayton and Clayton, 1981; OSHA, 1978). Long-i -rm exposure to xylenes
' leads to exaggerated effects, including impaired cardiac function, memory loss, hepatic
malfunction, and nephrosis (Haley, 1986).
' 30-0136-11
3-12
r
