Cold ex sure <br /> 8. 11iolQgic h rd <br /> 5.2 CHEMICAL HAZARDS <br /> Hazardous chemicals that may be encountered onsite include diesel and gasoline hydrocarbons. <br /> These chemicals are volatile, flammable, and moderately to extremely toxic. Potential hazards <br /> associated with petroleum hydrocarbons include inhalation, ingestion,and skin absorption of toxic <br /> vapors, liquids, or dusts. <br /> Gasoline vapors in high concentrations (greater than 300 parts per million [ppm]) can cause eye, <br /> nose, and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness, and anesthesia. Skin contact with liquid gasoline <br /> may result in irritation and dermatitis, and absorption of specific toxic petroleum fractions. Toxic <br /> petroleum hydrocarbon substances include the following volatile organic compounds (VOC): <br /> benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX). Benzene is a known human <br /> carcinogen and, along with toluene and xylenes, can cause damage to an unprotected individual's <br /> liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Ethylbenzene is a skin irritant in vapor and liquid <br /> form. <br /> i 6.0 HAZARD ASSESSMENT <br /> Consistent efforts will be made throughout the project to evaluate the chemical and physical <br /> hazards described above. Fire, explosion, and VOC exposure hazards will be evaluated in the <br /> following manner. <br /> 6.1 FIRE AND EXPLOSION <br /> A direct-reading portable combustible gas indicator (CGI), which measures VOC concentrations <br /> in ppm or as a percentage of the lower explosive limit (LEL), will be used to evaluate the <br /> possible formation of flammable atmospheres in and around the work area. Continuous <br /> measurements will be obtained at the top of each borehole throughout the drilling operations. <br /> Periodic measurements will also be collected in any confined areas that may contain and <br /> accumulate combustible vapors. <br /> 6.2 EXPOSURE TO VOC <br /> Airborne concentrations of VOC will be monitored with the CGI described above. <br /> Measurements will be obtained from the top of each borehole and at stockpiles of soil cuttings. <br /> • <br />
