ATTACHMENT B
FIELD AND LABORATORY PROCEDURES
Exploratory Drilling and Soil and Groundwater Sampling
The CPT soil bonngs were advanced using a direct push cone penetrometer testing
(CPT) rig to log soil stratigraphy Immediately adjacent to each CPT borehole, a second
direct-push borehole was advanced to collect discrete soil and groundwater samples
Soil samples were collected using an Envirocore sampler, or similar technology Soil
samples were retained in plastic sleeves and capped with Teflon squares and plastic end
caps Groundwater samples were collected using a hydropunch, or similar technology,
by lowering a stainless steel or Teflon bailer into accumulated groundwater in the
borehole, then retrieving and transferring the water into laboratory supplied containers
The soil and groundwater sample containers were placed on ice for transport to the
laboratory accompanied by chain-of-custody documentation Down-hole boring and
sampling equipment was steam-cleaned prior to and following the completion of each
soil boring Down-hole sampling equipment was washed in a tri-sodium phosphate or
AlconoxTM solution between samples
Laboratory Procedures
Soil and groundwater samples collected were analyzed for the presence of total
petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as diesel (TPHd) and total petroleum hydrocarbons
quantified as gasoline (TPHg) by EPA Method 8015, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene,
and xylenes (BTEX) by EPA Method 8020, and the fuel oxygenates methyl tertiary butyl
ether (MtBE), tertiary butanol (TBA), di-isopropyl ether (DIPS), ethyl tertiary-butyl
ether (EtBE), tertiary-amyl methyl ether (TAME), 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), 1,2-
dibromoethane (EDB), ethanol, and methanol by EPA Method 8260A
Soil Cuttings and Rinsate Water
No soil cuttings were generated during drilling operations Water generated during
steam cleaning and sampling of the borings was hauled offsite by Gregg Drilling for
disposal at an appropriate disposal facility
