" 6
KLEINFELDER
The PTD field screening will provide a qualitative indication of petroleum
A
hydrocarbons in the soil. The PID will assist in guiding the direction
and limit of the excavation, and in selecting the confirmation samples for
quantification by a certified analytical laboratory.
go
3.3 CONFIWIATION SAMPLING
Upon completing the additional soil excavation, confirmation soil samples
P
will be collected from the walls of the excavation to assess the presence
ka
of petroleum hydrocarbons remaining in the soil. Based on the results of
the PID screening, a minimum of two soil samples will be analyzed on a
24-hour RUSH turnaround schedule for total petroleum hydrocarbons
extractable by. GC/FID and volatile aromatic compounds (benzene, toluene,
r' ethyl be :ene, and xylene) by FPA Method 8020. The actual number of
confirmation samples submitted will be discussed and coordinated in the
field with SJLHD ' personnel. If significant petroleum hydrocarbon
contamination is detected, additional soil will be removed where possible.
Upon receipt of ..the analytical results for . ,the confirmation samples,
r Kleinfelder will prepare a brief report .for submittal to the SJLHD, With
SJLHT'_. . approval; The Customer Company will then proceed with the
installation of new underground tanks. The PID screening and confirmation
samples '"will . be used to show that the :TPH concentrations have been
excavated to acceptable levels. Installation of : the new tants will
require' the excavation `:of. additional soil. As a precaution, this"soil
will be screened in the field with the PID. If positive PID readings are
ja
recorded, the SJLHD will be notified.
k
3.4:
EXCAVATIQN LIMITS ,
 rr
An attempt will be .made to excavate petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated
soil to below.laboratory reporting : limits. The excavation will be
continued until petroleum. hydrocarbons are not indicated in field
screening results or analytical results.
• - - f
ti
+ 97-88-509 4
