the Specification Sheet respectively. This bioremediation method termed
"augmentation" utilizes the Bio-Rem H-10 blend of bacteria and micronutrients.
The bacteria itself is termed "microaerophilic". A more specific definition of
the microaerophilic bacteria may be found within Appendix A, Mechanism Statement.
The H-10 blend, which was chosen for the bioremediation of this site, is a hardy
' blend of bacteria cultures which have been selected for their ability to degrade
over two hundred forty hydrocarbon compounds. The blend includes specific
cultures designed to degrade hydrocarbons ranging from those in the heavy realm
with no volatility (i. e. compounds greater than C32, an example would be coal
' tars) to those in the light realm with high volatility (i. e. less than three,
an example being gasoline). The H-10 Product is proven to be non-pathogenic.
Please see Appendix A for the pathogen study.
' Furthermore, these proprietary micronutrients are able to worm in situ
underground in less than one to two ppm dissolved oxygen. The H-10 works actively
in a wide temperature range from 38 degrees to 120 degrees F. Because
microaerophilic cultures do not cause the slime problem (soil clogging) that
aerobic cultures do, they are able to easily function within all soil types,
specifically those soils characterized as problematic soils, i. e. tight clay.
' Sandy soils like that of Cheaper' #37 are definitely efficient for the H-10.
The Bio-Reay H-10 bacteria product also contains micronutrients. These
proprietary micronutrients are blended with the bacteria in trace amounts. The
purpose of the nutrients are to encourage the propogation of the bacteria in
order to build an adequate colony to completely remediate the site. These
nutrients cause one bacteria to become over 27,000 during the three hour period
that they are mixed with water in the bio-tank prior to placement. As a results,
all micronutrients are exhausted before the blend in placed within the
contaminant plume. Since the micronutrients are present in only trace amounts
prior to the propogation process, it is apparent that they are significantly
reduced beyond that point and are well within drinking water standards.
In order, to prepare the site for this batch solution of cultures, Pacific
Rim Environmental proposes 6 borings as confirmation/monitoring wells 6 inches
in diameter to a depth of 5 feet. The construction of the monitoring well is
detailed in Figure 3. 37 borings as infiltration/remediation borings 6 inches
in diameter will be bored into the remainder of the contaminated area at a depth
of 6 feet for a total of 60 borings/wells. This boring/well grid pattern will
cover the defined area of the contaminant plume. Figure 3 details the exact
location of the infiltration borings and wells. Infiltration borings will have
temporary steel caps. After application they will be removed and the borings
closed with sand compacted to required standards. Upon completion of remediation,
monitoring wells will be closed with six-sack sand cement grout.
Once the infiltration gallery is in place, any free product would be
removed. The removal of such free product will be done by electric pump. They
will use a one-inch diameter hose with a length of 28 feet for product removal
by vacuum pump method at a removal capability rate of approximately three inches
of product per hour. Selection of a one-inch hose will assure that the sides of
the wells will remain undisturbed. Product will be transferred to barrels and
used in our mixing process. At that point, the site is ready to have the H-10
blend infiltrated through the borings. A total of 10, 000 gallons of the
propogated cultures mixed with clean water will be introduced to the site. More
specifically, the H-10 blend will be propogated in poly tanks of either 500 or
8
