Paq• 2
trench near the on-site building was discolored and
malodorous- apparently as a result of fuel hydrocarbon
contamination. Soil excavated from the trench near the
western property boundary showed no evidence of
contamination. All excavated soil was placed atop 6 mil
polyethylene sheeting and covered with the sheeting.
On August 24, 1994, the soil storage piles were sampled for
certified laboratory analyses in accordance with PHS/EHD
and Regional Water Quality Control Board guidelines . Each
of the two discrete soil samples (one per every 20 cubic
yards of contaminated soil ) was acquired by driving a 1 . 9
inch diameter by 6. 0 inch long clean brass tube into the
soil until each tube was completely filled with
consolidated material . Upon being withdrawn from the soil ,
the ends of each tube were covered with aluminum foil ,
fitted with plastic caps, and sealed with duct tape. Each
tube was then marked and placed within an iced, insulated
container for transportation to Priority Environmental Labs
under chain of custody. Certified analyses were performed
for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Diesel (TPH-D) using
EPA Methods 3550/8015 , Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as
Gasoline (TPH-G) , benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total
xylenes (BTEX) using EPA Methods 5030/8015-8020 , Oil and
Grease (TOG) using SM 5520 D&F, Halogenated Volatile
Organics (HVOs) using EPA Method 8010 , and cadmium,
chromium, lead, nickel , and zinc using EPA Methods 7130 ,
7190 , 7420 , 7520 , and 7950 , respectively . The results of
these analyses are summarized in the following table:
Table 1
Analytical Results of Soil Samples Acquired from
the Soil Storage Piles at 275 Grant Line Road
on August 24, 1994
Sample No. TPH-D TPH-G B T E X TOG
(ppm) (ppm) (ppb) (ppm)
-----------------------------------------------------------
SP-Center N.D.
