PID readings exceeding 250ppm in 'the workers breathing zone will
require work stoppage and site evacuation. An explosion proof
fan may be used to vent the wort; area.
pFCONTAMINATION: .
During all field operations, care will be taker// minimize
contact with soils and groundwater. Drilling spoils and
developmental water will be stored on--site for proper treatment
or disposal. This will minimize contact and dispersion of
potentially contaminated materials.
If necessary, upon exit from the work site, loose debris will be
remived from protective clothing by brushing or rinsing.' Gloves
and boots will be decontaminated in a 5% solution of trisodium
Phosphate and rinsed with water which will be disposed on on-
site. Respirator cartridges, per-filters, inner gloves and
coveralls will be placed in a drum on-site for disposal. No one
will exit the site with contaminated clothing or equipment.
RECORD KEEPING:
All site safety records pertaining to the site characterization
study will be maintained by the Safety Coordinator/ProJect
Manager throughout the project.
Air Monitoring:
The Safety Coordinator will conduct periodic air monitoring
using direct reading sampling equipment as required. At a
minimum the following monitoring wiI.l be performed .:
1•: ombus a nd V Hors: Potentially explosive
concentrations of gases and vapors will be monitored at
least once every 15 minutes during sampling activites .using
a combustible gas meter. If at any time the concentration
exceeds 20% of the lower explosive limit (LPL) activities
will stop and the area will be evacuated until gas levels
have been reduced to :.t
less than 20%.__of...the
...
: LL_ancl he.
_of combugtible_gases or_
vapors has: been determined - -
2• Qtal drgunic Vapnr5_ A direct reading photoionization
detection (PID) meter (Hnu PI 101 ar equivalent) will be
used to monitor the: concentrations of organic vapors in the
work area. . Measurements will be taken at least `once every.
15 minutes during surface and subsurface sample collection.
. The meter will be calibrated for " benzene.. . Total organic
vapor;mensurements will be used to dstermino the appropriate
levels of . respiratory protection. and conditions .for site
evacuation. Total organic vapor concentrationsin the
workers breathing zone in excess of loppm above background
will trigger an upgrade from level D to ;level C protection.
Breathing zone` concentrations in excess of 250 ppm will stop:
the work on-site until the work zone concentration's are
reduced to .below. 250ppm.
