4
Determination of the Direction of Groundwater Flow
and
F1ow Rate
at the
Pestana Trust Property
275 Grant Line Road, Tracy, CA
A transit survey was performed at the subject site to
determine the relative elevations of the well heads of the
three groundwater monitoring wells at the subject site .
The purpose of the survey was to determine the direction of
groundwater flow. Light , non-aqueous phase liquids
(LNAPLs) have been detected in shallow groundwater at the
site and may be migrating as a plume, as well as dissolving
in the water , and volatilizing.
The flow of water in a saturated porous medium such as soil
is defined by Darcy's Law This law states that under
saturated conditions, the volume of water flowing per unit
area, per unit time (Q/At=v) is directly proportional to
the product of hydraulic conductivity (K) of that soil and
• the hydraulic gradient (h/L) ; -
v-K h/L
Measurements acquired at the site appear in Tables 1 and 2 •
Table 1
Well Head Elevations and Depth to Groundwater at 275 Grant
Line Road, Tracy , CA, November 23 , 1993
Well Head Depth to Relative Groundwater
Well Elevation* Groundwater Elevations
Number ( ft) ( ft) ( ft)
-----------------------------------------------------------
MW-1 60 . 51 8 . 10 52 41
MW-2 59 40 7 . 10 52 30
MW-3 60 05 7 . 56 52 49
*Well head elevations were determined with respect to an
arbitrary datum established at the edge of a concrete
footing for a light standard located at the southeast
