09/12/97 16:50 GR/GSI—SACTO - 12094646139 020
dS[Field MOUI005 and P"u,ea
alternately surging the well with a vented surge block, then purging the well with a pump
or bailer to remove accumulated sediments and draw groundwater into the well.
Development continues until the groundwater parameters (temperature, pll, and
conductivity) have stabilized. Well development is performed by Gettler-Ryan Inc. of
Dublin, California. Wells are monitored and sampled on a quarterly basis by Unocal
Corporation's monitoring and sampling contractor.
NtorinE and ampling of Drill Cuttings
Drill cuttings are stockpiled on and covered with plastic sheeting. Stockpile samples are
collected and analyzed for disposal classification on the basis of one composite sample per
100 cubic yards of soil. Stockpile samples are composed of four discrete soil samples,
each collected from an arbitrary location on the stockpile. The four discrete samples are
then composited in the laboratory prior to analysis.
Each discrete stockpile sainple is collected by removing the upper 3 to 6 inches of soil, and
them driving the stainless steel or brass sample tube into the stockpiled material with a
hand, mallet, or drive sampler. The sample tubes are then covered on both ends with
teflon sheeting or aluminum foil, capped, labeled, and placed in a cooler with blue ice for
preservation. A chain-of-custody form is initiated in the field and accompanies the selected
soil samples to the analytical laboratory. Stockpiled soils are covered with plastic sheeting
after completion of sampling.
VES VBDDr Stream Sampk Collceliga
Influent and effluent vapor stream samples are collected by connecting the sample bag to
the sampling port via clean tygon tubing. The sample bag is then placed inside the air
sampling container, which is attached to an air pump. To obtain a sample from the VES
vapor stream, the air pump is activated, inducing a vacuum inside the sample container.
The induced vacuum allows the sample bag to inflate by drawing an air sample from the
VES vapor stream via the sample port and tubing. Once the sample bag is full, it is placed
in a separate container to protect it from sunlight, and delivered to the laboratory for
analysis.
A-3
