AZ PJA
Working To Restore Nature
 May 4, 1993
Unocal Station No 6981, Stockton, California
2.0 BACKGROUND
The site is an operating gasoline retail service station and is located at 4707 Pacific Avenue
in Stockton, California, as shown on the Site Vicinity Map (Plate 1) The site is bounded
to the south by March Lane, to the west and north are parking lots for a Target store, and
to the east is Pacific Avenue On the south side of March Lane is a small strip mall and
to the east of Pacific Avenue is a parking lot for Weberstown shopping mail Unocal
assumed the lease on the property and purchased the already-existing gasoline station
facilities from Tesoro Gasoline Marketing Company in April 1984 (PHR, 1992) The
purchase consisted of the buildings, canopy, eight pumps, and three 12,000-gallon
underground gasoline-storage tanks
Upon acquiring the station, Unocal had the tanks tested for tightness Two of the three
tanks tested tight, however, a leak was found in the vapor return line connection to the third
tank. Following repairs, the tank tested tight (PHR, 1992)
In May 1988, soil containing gasoline was discovered surrounding the product lines around
the pump islands The lines were removed, and approximately 1,600 cubic yards of soil were
excavated and aerated onsite After aeration, the soil was disposed of at a Class III landfill
The product delivery system, tanks, and piping were removed and two new 12,000-gallon
gasoline-storage tanks were placed in the original tank cavity (PHR, 1992) The
approximate configuration of the station is depicted on the Generalized Site Plan (Plate 2)
38032-13 2
