• SEF 65 '89 13:43 LIHDORFr -CALMANINI WOODLAND
26
V. MONrrORING PROGRAM AND NETWORK _ W ,YRIM CATION MONTTORINr
The RWQCB has classified SMS Briners as a Class II - Designated Waste surface
Impoundment, but has allowed an Interim status designation while SMS Briners pursued
the alternative of deep well injection disposal. The Briners are requesting that the
Board allow continued interim status of the facility while the Briners implement the
schedule discussed in Section IV for providing an alternate method of brine handling
and disposal and the elimination of the evaporation ponds.
It is apparent that one or both ponds have caused some degradation of shallow ground-
water quality in the immediate viciaity of those ponds. Interim ver'if'ication monitoring is
proposed to further define local conditions and the horizontal and vertical extent of
degraded water quality. The monitoring program and additional site investigation
activities proposed below will also allow ground-water conditions to be monitored during
and after closure of the ponds.
The proposed interim verification monitoring program consists of four components:
construction of additional monitoring facilities, further investigation of the existing
monitoring network, an interim verification/closure monitoring network, and an interim
verification monitoring program, including recommendations for measuring ground-water
levels and for collecting and analyzing surface and ground-water samples. Those
components are discussed in detail below.
Additional Monitoring Facilities
Based on the findings of the site investigation to date, the areal extent of saline water
