Box 6012
San Ramon, Ca 94583-0712
SAMPLING PLAN, CHEVRON PIPE LINE COMPANY,MANSFIELD PROPERTY, TRACY,
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
I have reviewed Geomatrix's 13 August 1999 Schedule and Plan for Additional Sampling for the
Mansfield property site in Tracy. The sampling plan proposes to advance one boring at the site to collect
soil and groundwater samples which will be used to determine the presence of dissolved-phase
petroleum hydrocarbons in groundwater. The sampling plan states that the assessment will be conducted
downgradient of a previously delineated area of petroleum hydrocarbon affected soil and the data will
finalize the site assessment for the property.
The sampling plan is hereby approved provided that the following comments are addressed and/or
incorporated into the sampling plan.
1. The sampling plan should explain how the soil contamination plume surrounding MB-I was
established when there are only three sampling locations within or in the vicinity of the plume. The
proposed sampling locations.about 100 feet north of the edge of the MB-1 plume. It should be
moved within 50 feet of the plume.
2. The sampling plan should include step-out procedures in case the one sample location does not
define the extent of the dissolved plume.
By 1 October 1999, I request that you submit a report which summarizes the investigation findings and
provides recommendations and a time schedule for implementation of additional work, if necessary.
Please inform me at least 72 hours prior to initiation of fieldwork so that I may be present to observe
and/or take split samples.
California Environmental Protection Agency
a Recycled Paper
