Infurna, Jr. PERMI'I. SERVICES
San Joaquin County Public Health Services
Environmental Health Division
P.O. Box 388
Stockton, CA 95201-0388
Subject: Soil and Groundwater Sampling Work Plan
Mansfield Property
Byron Road
Tracy, California
Dear Mr. Infurna:
Geomatrix Consultants, Inc. (Geomatrix)have prepared this workplan on behalf of Chevron
Pipe Line Company(CPL) for work to be conducted at the Mansfield Property(the site;
Figure 1). The proposed scope of work was developed based on the results of an initial
investigation conducted at the site by Geomatrix on 22 October 1998. A soil boring(B-1)
advanced as part of this investigation indicates that petroleum hydrocarbons are present in site
soil. The objective of this investigation is to further assess the presence of petroleum-affected
soil in the vicinity of B-1 and along the southern edge of the property and the possible
presence of petroleum-affected groundwater at the site that may be associated with CPL'S Old
Valley Pipeline (OVP). The proposed scope of work is described below.
Geomatrix will contract with Precision Sampling, Inc. to advance approximately ten soil
borings at the site. Approximately 5 borings will be advanced to assess the lateral and vertical
extent of petroleum hydrocarbon affected soil in the vicinity of boring B-1, the number of
borings required to do this will be agreed upon in the field by Geomatrix and the San Joaquin
County Public Health Services (SJCPHS). Five additional borings will be advanced at
approximately 200-foot intervals to the northwest of boring B-1 to assess the possible presence
of petroleum hydrocarbon affected soil along the southern edge of the site(Figure 2). Prior to
field activities, Geomatrix will contract a private utility locator to identify potential
underground utilities at proposed boring locations and notifying Underground Service Alert
(USA). Borings will be advanced using a hydraulically driven, direct push core barrel and
drive sampler. Soil recovered from continuous cores will be examined and logged in
accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) as presented in the American
Society of Testing and Materials Standard D2488-90. One soil sample will be collected for
chemical analyses from each boring at either the area of soil core most visibly affected
petroleum hydrocarbons, or from just above the groundwater table if petroleum hydrocarbons
Geomatrix Consultants, Inc.
Engineers, Geologists, and Environmental Scientists
