>K"
Nove:Tber 11, 1987
Ms. Lori Cotulla and Mr. Dan Moe
San Joaquin County Health District
1601 E. Hazelton Avenue
Stockton, Ca 95201
RE: GRMCF.-,7 ASSESS!,a:NT OF PROPERTY LMUED AT 724 E. GR-kN'T L=
ROAD, TP-)kC`Y, CA
Dear Ms. Cotulla md Mr. Mce:
It is my understanding that your agency nay be requiring Reynolds
Brawn to install several aroundwater manitoring ,lls at the prcpexty
in order to define the extent of benzene contaidnation in the acmifer.
The request made by Mr. Moe is based on the results of a report by
Appliea Geosystems indicatLng the presence of benzene in standing
groundwater upon removal of an underground tank at the subject
prcperty- Following your suggestion, we followed the advice of our
con-sultants, A(Tua Terra Technologies, Inc. They su=ested resa-7pling
the ey-istinq monitorina well because the crroumt,;ater samle collected
by Applied G—e-systems was not taken accor=g to protocol established
bv the Deoartment of Health Services or the Recional Water Quality
Control Board for collecting of groun(t.;ater. The results of resa-7pling
the existino 7tr)nitorina w-ell indicated that benzene w--s not- detectable-
I am of the opinion that anz)rooriate m--asures ,7-=re take-i to determine
'h he folla.ing findings state otherwise:
if conta:rdnation exists, whi
1. Soil samples analyzed by Applied Geosyste.ms indicated no
conta-aination.
7
2. The d---em gra(Lent well, installed and sa-rmled by Re-r-inedy, Jenks
Chilton, indicated no detectable levels of benzene. (Report dated
January, 1987.)
3. Keiinedy, Jenks & Chilton found no detectable levels of benzene in
soil saimles and 13 50 43 mg/Kg (ppb) of toluene in soil.
4. The resampling of the existing for benzene, xylene and
toluene by Aqua Terra Technologies, indicated no de--tectable levels
I
of these ca-->:)-unds.
5. The sampling of the around,.,:ater by Appl4ed Geosystems was
inappropriate and not accorcang to protor-ol.
ov-ens
