This clay was compacted with a vibratory
sheepsfoot roller. This clay layer was installed to provide a barrier between
groundwater and shallow soils which have a
contamination. low level of hydrocarbon
• The aerated soil piles were transferred to the excavation, and compacted in 2-
foot layers. This tank
contained about 8 inches of waste oil and about 30 inches of solid oily sludge.
Clayton obtained a permit for the removal of this tank. The tank was removed
cn August 17, 1990. Analysis of soil samples collected from beneath the
former Iocation of the removed septic tank did not reveal any significant
contamination.
• After aerating the excavated soil, eight composite samples were collected at
the direction of PHS/EHD and analyzed for TPH as gasoline, BTEX, and oil
and grease. Laboratory analyses revealed the following:
- Gasoline, benzene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes were.not detected
Toluene was detected at concentrations of between 21 ppb and 220 ppb
- The concentration of TPH as oil andgrease ranged from 50 ppm to 300 ppm
• Based on the results of analysisof.samples of aerated soil, Clayton
recommended backfilling the excavation on September 28, 19:90, Soil
backfilling was.co.►npleted in the week ending October 21,.195p.
• "Because of residual oil and -
gre
compacted clay-was plaase in the aerates; soil, a 2-foot layer of
ced in the bottom of the excavation, before it was filled
with aerated soils.
