MrW
001 Gww_
Clayton
Ms. Laurie Cotulla
June 11, 1990
Page 4
• TASK 2 - SOIL EXCAVATION
Clayton proposes to excavate soils to groundwater in the vicinity of the former UST
and MW-3 (Figure 2). The excavation process will be supervised by a Clayton
geologist or environmental engineer. We estimate excavation of about 300 cubic
yards of soil. Operations will be monitored with an organic vapor meter (OVIV[) to
assure that all contaminated soils are excavated. Confirmation samples will be
collected from the excavation walls and analyzed by the following Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) methods:
- EPA Method 503018015-8020, for TPH as gasoline and BTEX
EPA Method 418.1, for total recoverable hydrocarbons and oil and arease
• TASK 3 - SOIL AERATION
Aeration of contaminated soils will be accomplished by spreading the soils in a thin
layer (approximately six inches thick) on a polymeric liner that protects surface
soils. To remain in compliance with the Air Pollution District guidelines, a
maximum of 300 cubic yards of soil will be aerated per day.
As a safety measure, the excavation area will be temporarily fenced and the walls
of the excavation will be sloped.
• TAJK 4- SOIL AERATION AND MONITORING
The excavated soils will be periodically rototilled to expose additional soils to
aeration. One discrete confirmation sample for each 25 yd' of aerated soil will be
collected and analyzed for the contaminants previously noted. Pending approval of
your agency and the Regional Board, the remediated soil will be backlIlled in the
excavated hole and compacted. A new monitoring well will be placed in a corner of
the excavation for future monitoring of baseline environmental conditions. This
- -,well will be resurveyed by a-licensed-land surveyor. -
TASK 5 - FINAL REPORTING
Upon completion of the project, Clayton will prepare.a report.summarizing the
findings. This report will include site activities, background soil sampling and.
laboratory analysis, and our cone;usions and recommendations. .
