Harding Lawson Associates
SA4x6CC Vapor Phase Activated Carbon. Manufacturer's
specifications and schematic drawings are presented in
4A* Attachment D. Treatment efficiency is 97 percent with
a capacity to retain approximately 25 percent of it's
own weight (500 pounds per reactor) based on
manufacturer's specifications and published research.
Typical operation of a VES utilizing activated carbon
for treatment has a removal efficiency of approximately
► 97 percent. This is greatly affected by the relative
humidity of the air stream as water vapor competes for
adsorption sites. As long as the water separator is
in-line with the VES prior to the first reactor, this
efficiency can be maintained. With two reactors in
series, the treatment efficiency increases to
approximately 99 percent. At a 99 percent efficiency
the calculated yield of the control equipment for the
VES is
i~
First day = 3 . 6 lbs (360 lbs x 0. 01)
Second day = 1. 5 lbs (150 lbs x 0. 01)
Third day = 0.8 lbs (80 lbs x 0.01)
Fourth day = 0.2 lbs (20 lbs x 0. 01)
,. Continued operation should yield approximately 18
pounds per day which equates as 0. 18 lbs/day or 65. 7
pounds per year. Activated carbon will be replaced
when the first reactor is unable to treat 90 percent of
the inlet vapor concentrations or as the conditions of
the permit specify.
There is no power or fuel supply required for operation
of the control equipment.
6. Locations and Amounts of Emissions
There is one exhaust source for this VES. The exhaust
stack extends from the top of the second carbon reactor
to a height of ten feet above the
g ground surface. The
exhaust stack is a 4 inch diameter PVC pipe. The
outlet flow rate is expected to be approximately 160-
180 CFM. The blower does have the capacity for a flow
rate of 200 CFM and for the purposes of highest
possible combinations, 200 CFM is used in these
.. calculations. The temperature of the exhaust gases is
expected to be close to ambient air temperature with a
. slight rise due to the heat transfer from the blower.
032909P/R53
