Harding Lawson Associates
MONITORING SCHEDULE / EQUIPMENT
The vapor extraction system (VES) will be monitored
#6a according to the guidelines specified by the San Joaquin Valley
Unified Air Pollution Control District (APCD) . A proposed
schedule would entail monitoring the VES daily for the first five
. days of operation and weekly thereafter. After operation of the
VES has progressed for some time, the monitoring schedule can be
adjusted to a monthly monitoring schedule if it can be shown that
the first carbon reactor will not "breakthrough" in treatment
efficiency.
we proposed to monitor hydrocarbon concentrations throughout
the VES process with a portable gas chromatograph that utilizes a
Flame Ionization Detector (FID) for measuring the total
hydrocarbon content of the air stream. Additional sampling can
* be performed on start-up and quarterly thereafter, using Tedlar
bags or activated charcoal tubes to be analyzed in the laboratory
by EPA Test Method 8015 for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH)
and by EPA Test Method 8020 for concentrations of benzene,
toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) .
Monitoring will be conducted from three sampling ports in
the process flow (Refer Plate 4) . Sampling point "VES"
represents the untreated air stream from the exhaust of the
blower prior to entering the first carbon reactor. Sampling
point "R-1" represents the exhaust of the first carbon reactor
prior to entering the second reactor. Sampling point "R-2"
represents the exhaust of the second carbon reactor and the
exhaust to the atmosphere from the total system.
Airflow measurements will be acquired from the blower
exhaust (VES) and from the second reactor (R-2) using a hand-held
anemometer. This anemometer measures the flow velocity in feet
per second and has a range of 0 to 600 ft/sec. Applied vacuum
from the intake of the blower is measured by an in-line vacuum
gauge mounted on the PVC manifold.
*moll
032909P/R53
