Work Plan for Soil Excavation 3
The Southland Co Store#20304 455 Grant Line Road CA Janua 26 1998
The document will be reviewed and signed by all Fluor Daniel GTI personnel and subcontractors
performing work at the site
An excavation permit will be applied for,if needed, through the SJCPHS prior to conducting the on-site
activities In addition, the Stockton Fre Department will be notified of the activity,so that personnel can be
onsite to witness the excavation,if necessary
TASK 2. SCOPE OF WORK
Pre-Excavation Activities
Subsurface utilities well be located and marked pnor to conducting subsurface activities Temporary
fencing will be put up along the southern side of the store at the sidewalk, the property line on Buthman
Avenue, and Grant Line Road to prevent pedestrian traffic from entering the excavation area (Figure 2)
Shoring of the excavation walls will not be required given the shallow depth of impacted sod, and the silty
clay stratigraphy from 0 to 5 feet BGS, below the 4-inch-thick asphalt cap Groundwater is expected at
approximately 5 feet BGS A vacuum truck company will be contracted to evacuate, transport and dispose
of the exposed groundwater during the excavation Groundwater recharge has been estimated at greater
than 20 gallons per minute Fourth quarter groundwater sample analytical results well be used for
characterization of the water prior to treatment and disposal
Soil Excavation and Sampling
Fluor Daniel GTI personnel will supervise the excavation of sod in areas that have historically contained
elevated concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons The expected area of highest concentration In soil
will be excavated as shown on Figure 2 The estimated size of the main source area is based on data
collected during past soil and groundwater assessment and historical groundwater mondonng sampling
Sod samples at the lateral and vertical limits of the excavation will be collected in 2-Inch-diameter by 6-
inch-long brass tubes directly from the bucket of the excavator All samples will be capped, labeled,
placed on Ice,and transported under chain-of-custody to a state-certified laboratory for analysts of
benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene and xylenes(BTEX),total petroleum hydrocarbons-asgasollne(TPH-G)
by Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) methods 8020/8015 modified,and oxygenates methyl-tert
butyl-ether(MTBE),tert butanol (TBA),d0sopropyl ether(DIPS),ethyl-tert-butyl-ether(ETBE),and tart
amyl-methyl-ether(TAME) by EPA method 8260
Field phototonization detector(PID) readings of soil vapors will be recorded to document the relative
hydrocarbon content of the soil during excavation as a qualitative method for determination of the limits of
excavation The final lateral extent and depth of the excavation will be measured and sketched on a site
045~LTR SOUTHLAND
FLUOR DANIEL GTI
