['Joo4 <br /> After heating the glass sample containers until warm, headspace vapors were <br /> analyzed with a Photovac TIP 1 Air Analyzer. The TIP 1 was periodically <br /> calibrated to measure all of the ionizable hydrocarbons as if they were <br /> benzene, using a standard gas. The results of these field analyses are <br /> noted on the drilling logs (Appendix B) , and were used to select soil <br /> samples appropriate for chemical. analysis. <br /> Two to four soil samples were selected for chemical analysis from each <br /> boring according to the following criteria: <br /> (1) The sample collected closest to the water table. <br /> (2) The sample collected five feet below the water table. <br /> (3) The sample with the highest apparent hydrocarbon concentration. <br /> (4) The deepest sample with apparent presence of hydrocarbons. <br /> In soil borings where headspace analyses indicated no hydrocarbon presence, <br /> samples were chosen by criteria 1 and 2. The water table was estimated in <br /> the field as the depth where the first apparently saturated sample was <br /> recovered (7 to 9 feet below ground surface) . <br /> Soil samples were submitted to a State-certified analytical laboratory <br /> (Groundwater Technology Environmental Laboratories) for the following <br /> analyses: total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (EPA Method 8015) ; <br /> benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (EPA Method 8020) ; and total lead <br /> (EPA Method 7421) . All soil samples were transferred to the laboratory by <br /> the geologist, where they were frozen and stored. Chain-of-custody forms <br /> were completed for samples submitted for chemical analysis. Copies of these <br /> forms are included in Appendix C. <br /> GROUNDWATER SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS <br /> Groundwater. samples were collected from all observation wells for chemical <br /> analysis. Prior to purging each well, the depth to water was measured and <br /> recorded. An acrylic bailer was then used to collect a sample from the <br /> water surface to check for floating product.
