PHSIEHD has
the following comments for your consideration and action.
The report included the results of the January 1, 1998 groundwater monitoring
and sampling event. Groundwater contamination continues to be evidenced and
continues to remain undefined. The analysis of the groundwater samples by
EPA Method 8260 evidenced Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) concentrations
of 72 ppb (MW-1), 320 ppb (MW4) and 260 ppb (MW-5). The analysis of
groundwater samples by EPA Method 8020 evidenced Benzene contamination
of 14 ppb (MW-1), 1.6 ppb (MW-2), 14 ppb (MW-4) and 1.1 ppb (MW-5), and
TPH diesel concentrations of 3400 ppb (MW-4) and 11,000 ppb (MW-5).
Comparisons in contamination concentrations with the October 29, 1997
groundwater monitoring and sampling event suggest that the plume is continuing
to migrate towards the northeast.
AGE suggested in the report that determination of the suitability of this site for
closure should be made at this time. In light of the above referenced
contamination, PHS/EHD would not concur with closure of this site.
In a letter dated June 18, 1997, PHSIEHD approved with modifications the "Work
Plan Addendum" which was prepared for the above referenced site by AGE and
dated June 10, 1997. The work plan addendum was prepared to further define
the lateral extent of the hydrocarbon contamination in soil and groundwater, and
proposed the installation of another groundwater monitoring well east of MW-5.
The modifications requested by PHSIEHD included the installation of an
additional well west of MW-4. The locations for both of these additional wells
A Division of San Joaquin Counry Healrhh Care Services
